Rewiring Your Home Electrical System

Every home will need its electrical wiring system rewired at some point in time. All wires and cables deteriorate, especially when used every day. Degraded wiring systems pose a danger to you and your family as they greatly increase the chance of electrical fires and electrical shocks. A trained electrician can solve this problem for you by fully rewiring and updating your home electrical system. They can inspect your existing wiring, determine which wires are no longer safe for use, and perform the necessary repairs. If you are experiencing electrical problems in your home, make sure you get your wiring system inspected and replaced as soon as possible.

When dealing with prospect of a complete home rewire, you need to make sure you hire the best electrician you can find. Check that the company you are considering has all the necessary accreditations and qualifications from the relevant authority.

Always ask for references and testimonials from former customers, as this will give you an excellent idea of the standard of their previous work. A good company will not hesitate to provide you with these testimonies, so if they seem unwilling, it’s a sign that this is not the company for you.

Ensure that you get any quotes and a price confirmed and in writing before the job begins. This will prevent any misunderstandings and problems later on, and will also aid you in comparing potential electricians. Also obtain a complete written warranty for the work before you begin. The time the job will take, and a completion date, should also be put in writing before work begins. And don’t be afraid to ask questions. If there is some aspect of the job you are unclear about, or are not sure what will be expected of you during the work, ask. A good electrician should be more than happy to answer any queries you might have.

Unless you are using an electrician that has been recommended to you, it’s a good idea to get quotes from at least two potential companies before you decide. This will help ensure that you are getting the best deal. Always remember that in this case cheaper is not necessarily better, as you want to make sure the job is done properly, carefully, and safely, with no cut corners or shoddy workmanship. Home rewiring is a very important job, and no expense should be spared.

If you take these simple precautions before hiring an electrician for your electric rewiring project, the work should be completed without a hitch, to the highest standard possible. Remember, when it comes to your home’s electricity, quality is very important as you don’t want to endanger yourself or your family. Making sure the work is done properly the first time round will hopefully prevent major expenditures of time and money in the future.

Updating Your Home Electrical System

There are many factors which may contribute to a decision to update and rebuild your home’s electrical system. You may be living in an older home which uses old, unsafe technology in the wiring and circuitry system. Or maybe you are undergoing a large renovation project in your home and need to have the electrical system rewired as part of the project. Safety, cost effectiveness, and remodelling are just some of the reasons you may want to upgrade your home electric system.

When carrying out an upgrade of your homes electrical circuitry and wiring system, you should always be sure to obtain the services of a professional electrician.  Major electrical projects such as rewiring require a high level of expertise and experience due to the delicate and complex nature of electrical systems. Additional work may also need to be done, especially in older homes; drywall and insulation may need to be removed in some areas. A trained electrician will be able to properly carry out all the necessary aspects of an electrical upgrade in as little time as possible.

A highly trained electrician will be able to give you a comprehensive quote for the cost of a job before work begins, and will ensure that any necessary permits are obtained. The electrician will come equipped with all the necessary tools and equipment needed for any electrical job, and will most likely come with a specialist team of other electricians, builders, and plumbers to help with any necessary work.

Before deciding on an electrician to hire, make sure that they can give you a guarantee for any work that will be done. Because of the costly nature of such a large electrical project, you will want to ensure that there will be no safety issues or other problems. Most professional electricians will provide a one-year guarantee at least.

If you live in a home that was built before 1970, you may be at a heightened risk of electrical fires in your home. Some pre-1970s homes were wired with electrical aluminium wiring, a material which has since been banned because it tended to cause fires. Electrical wires will also become corroded and worn over the years, and may become so eroded due to heat that they break. Breaks in wires can cause electrical arcs across the gaps, greatly increasing the chance of an electrical fire due to wayward sparks of electricity.

Even though having your home’s electrical system upgraded and renovated can be a costly and time-consuming endeavour, the benefits are well worth the trouble. You will greatly increase the safety of you and your family by reducing the risk of electrical fires and other malfunctions. If the cost of a complete electrical overhaul is too great, a professional electrician will still be able to help you find ways to increase the safety of your home electrical system.

Electrical Safety Tips for Around the Home

A lot of people take their home electrical system for granted, and never consider how dangerous electricity can be. It is important that everybody knows basic information about how to stay safe around electricity in the home. The widespread use of electrical appliances and equipment in every part of our lives makes electrical safety vital.  Incorrect use, installation, and maintenance can make these handy electric appliances a danger to everyone who uses them.

Electrical dangers include electrocution, electrical shocks, electrical burns, and electric fires. Hundreds of people are seriously hurt or killed by electricity related injuries every year. For that reason, you need to be aware of the simple steps you can take to increase the safety of your home electrical system and prevent accidents from happening.
Safety in the Bathroom

The most important safety precaution you can take in the bathroom is to keep all electrical devices such as electric shavers, hair dryers, curling irons, and electric toothbrushes away from water and other moisture. Try and make sure these items do not get wet, and never plug or unplug electrical devices when your hands are wet. Also remember to unplug these electronic devices when you have finished using them.

You can also install a device called a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). This will help protect you from the dangers of electric shocks in case water and electricity does somehow come into contact.
The safest option for light switch in the bathroom is a ceiling mounted pull cord made of insulating material. This will prevent water getting onto the light switch if you flick it with wet hands, or it gets splashed.

Safety in the Kitchen
All fixed electrical appliances should be installed correctly by a professional electrician. Kitchen appliances should be used and maintained properly. Keep electrical sockets, switches, and appliances well away from the sink. The combination of water, electricity, and high heat in the kitchen can be deadly, so always take extreme care in the kitchen.

If you smell burning odours in your home, or the lights flicker often, and you lose power often, call an electrician. These may be signs of problems with your home electrical circuitry and wiring. Do not try and inspect or fix the wiring yourself, as this can be very dangerous. Always call a qualified professional for the job.

You can also help increase electrical safety by trying to avoid overloaded outlets and circuits by not plugging in an exorbitant number of electrical appliances. Overloads can cause dangerous surges, blown fuses, and other malfunctions.
Remember, safety should always come first in regards to your home electrical system. When in doubt, always call a trained, professional electrician first.

Common Electrical Problems

Electricity and electrical devices pervade our everyday lives. We use electricity for leisure, work, and to make our lives easier. Since we use it so often, electrical problems in the home need to be recognised and dealt with as soon as possible. Because of the inherent safety risks involved in working with electrical devices, it is always best to hire a professional electrician to deal with any electrical issues in your home.  If you ever see sparks, notice evidence of a short circuit, or detect a burning odour, call an electrician right away. Situations like that can be very dangerous, and can result in serious house fires. Do not attempt to deal with the problem yourself.

Here are some common problems that people often encounter with their home electrical systems.

Overloaded circuits are a frequent issue due to the large numbers of electrical appliances people having running in their homes nowadays. This can be dealt with my flipping the circuit breaker, or replacing the blown fuse. If neither of these fixes the circuit, it could mean a larger problem.

If you have an appliance that simply refuses to work, you should first make sure it is plugged in and switched on. Often people forge to check this basic fact. You can also try plugging the appliance into a different outlet. If this makes the appliance work, you should call an electrician to have a look at the first outlet, as this indicates that it is faulty and poses a safety hazard.

Losing power to one part of your house but not others usually indicates a problem with the circuit breaker of your home: a breaker may have been tripped, or a fuse could have blown. You can flip the breaker or replace the fuse, but if the problem persists, it could mean a more serious problem. An electrician should also be called if the breakers and fuses are functioning in your home, but you are still losing power.

If you have a electrical problem in your home, check the simple explanations first, such as making sure appliances are plugged in and switched on, and trying different outlets.  Explain the problem in as much detail as you can to your electrician, as this will help them identify and solve the problem much faster. While flipping a tripped breaker is something you can do yourself, anything more involved, such as replacing a fuse, should be dealt with by a trained electrician. Working with live wires is simply too dangerous for an amateur. You could also end up making the problem worse by making mistakes. If you’re not sure what the problem is, always call an electrician. It is far better to be safe than sorry.

Electrical Heating in Your Home

In recent years, electrical heating has become an environmentally friendly alternative to heating your home in the winter months. It is simpler and less costly to install than other forms of heating such as gas, oil, and coal, and can be used as a secondary form of heating to supplement to main heating system. Although it is often more expensive to run than conventional heating methods, it is far better for the environment as no combustion gases are formed.
There are many types of electrical heating available nowadays. Underfloor heating entails electrical heating cables being laid under the floors of your home. Because of the work involved, this is probably only viable if you are building a new home, or are performing major renovations.

Storage heaters are large, wall mounted heating systems which store off-peak (and therefore cheaper) electricity during the night, and then release it throughout the next day. You will need special wiring and off peak meters to be installed for this type of electrical heater, and you will need to be put on an “off peak tariff” by your electrical company.

Fan heaters are small, cheap, and portable electrical heaters that generate heat very quickly.  In summer they can also be used as regular fans.

Convector heaters are bigger and more expensive that fan heaters. They can be either stand-alone or wall mounted, and run almost silently, which can be handy during the night.

Oil-filled radiators can be wall mounted, or put on wheels so that they can be moved around easily. Although slower to generate heat that fan or convector heaters, they can provide a lower temperature of heat over a larger area.
If you want to install an electric heater in your bathroom, there are a few things to consider. The heater must be turned on by a pull cord, or from outside the room to protect the switch from water damage.  They are normally wall mounted, and can double as towel rails that also dry your towels. You can get down-flow fan heaters that are installed near the ceiling, or can have heating light bulbs installed.

Electric fires can vary greatly in cost and effectiveness. These usually work by combining convection and radiant heating, and can be made to resemble real log fires.

If you are having any kind of electrical heater installed in your home, make sure you hire a professional electrician to do the job. Electricity can be dangerous, and you don’t want to have any accidents or make any major mistakes. An electrician will make sure your electrical heater is installed correctly, and that it is working the way it should. When it comes to electrical safety, you should never take chances.
